The Treffeisen Family

Researched and Compiled by Tim Doyle, 2003 – 2004

Introduction

The following is my working outline of the Treffeisen family. Some of the links are hypothetical and need further research. Individuals who emigrated to or who were born in America are listed in red.

In German, the name Treffeisen can be broken down into two words: the verb ‘treffen’, which means ‘to hit or to strike’, and the noun ‘Eisen’, which means ‘iron’. This combination of hitting or striking iron indicates that our earliest ancestor was most likely a blacksmith. It is somewhat ironic that the very unusual and rare name of Treffeisen is most likely equivalent in meaning to the very common name Smith.

Where did the Treffeisen family originate? Because most, if not all, current Treffeisens can be traced back to the village of Bickensohl, one might believe that it was there that the family originated. However, the earliest Bickensohl records indicate that the family had actually come from the nearby village of Gallenweiler. The Treffeisens are indeed included in the very earliest records of Gallenweiler. The front page of the Gallenweiler records includes a statement by the minister that Gallenweiler had been destroyed in the Thirty Years’ War (1618 to 1648). Only a few inhabitants remained and only two houses survived the war. For a long time the village remained a wilderness with fields and pastures dead. Then, in 1648, the first settlers arrived. Matthias Treffeisen and his wife Dorothea Gumbert were witnesses to the very first baptism in Gallenweiler, indicating that they were either part of the few Gallenweiler residents who survived the war, or that they were members of this original party of settlers. It appears that the Treffeisens resided here in Gallenweiler before the war, as in 1640
when Christoff’s son Thomas was married in Haltingen, he was listed as residing in Oberweiler, but his deceased father was listed as having been a citizen of Gallenweiler.

One issue that I feel the need to comment on is illigitimacy. It was not uncommon for children to be born out of wedlock in the past, just as it is today. I do not identify births as being illigitimate here to judge their parents on moral grounds. I include that information simply because it is historical fact, and such information can very well explain some familial situations. Also, calling out the fact that a birth was illigitimate ensures that I know of the date discrepancy and have not entered a date in error into these records.

Additional Treffeisen information can be found here.

Treffeisens in Heroldsberg and vicinity

A small but very early group of Treffeisens has been located in the villages of Heroldsberg and Beerbach/Lauf am Holz. Heroldsberg is a medium sized village to the north of Nürnberg, Germany and Beerbach is a small village about 4km northeast of Heroldsberg. Although it is not known if or how these families might be related to the Treffeisens of Baden, it is possible that one or more Treffeisens from this group left the Heroldsberg area and ended up there.

M1. Caintz (Cuntz?) Treffeisen was born say 1525? He married Mag. (—–). In 1561, Heroldsberg had a visitation and a return was filed. In this report, it was mentioned that “Treffeisen’s wife goes to church only very rarely.” Early on Sunday, 28 September 1561, [the Visitors] saw and heard the church ordinance, the sermon, and the ceremonies in the church. At the end the people who had been cited [before the authorities] were called for and given the following dispatch: 1) Treffeisen’s wife, who has not been going to church, will henceforth go more eagerly than has been the case up to now. She is at odds with someone, but they have [since] been reconciled. It is not certain if this report is actually referring to Caintz and his wife Magdalena or another family.
Children of Caintz Treffeisen and Mag. are:

M2   i. Lenhardt Treffeisen was baptized 19 Jan 1549 in Heroldsberg.
M3. Jorg Treffeysen / Treffeyßen was born say 1540?
Children of Jorg Treffeysen / Treffeyßsen and an unknown woman are:

M4   i. Elisabetha Treffeysen was born 26 Apr 1563 in Heroldsberg.
M5   ii. Kunegund Treffeyßen was born 15 Jan 1565 in Heroldsberg.
M6   iii. Hanß Treffeyßen was born 31 Dec 1569 in Heroldsberg.
M7. Georg Treffeysen / Trefeyßen was born say 1545? He married Barbara (—–). It is possible that this Georg was the same man as the Jorg listed above.
Children of Georg Treffeysen / Trefeyßsen and Barbara are:

M8   i. Anna Trefeyßen was born 15 Mar 1568 in Beerbach.
M9   ii. Hans Treffeysen was born 1 May 1571 in Beerbach.

The source for all of these records is the IGI. They were apparently submitted to this index by an individual and not by a FHL sanctioned extraction program. I have not been able to locate the original church records for these areas on the list of microfilmed records available from the FHL.

It is not known if this Treffeisen family is related to the Treffeisens of southwest Baden, but it is possible that one of this family emigrated south and eventually he or his children found themselves in the very southwest portion of Germany or further south in Switzerland.

The Treffeisens of Baden

Generation One
1. Christoff ‘Stoffel’ Treffeÿsen / Dreffeisen was born perhaps about 1590 and died sometime before 1640, probably in Gallenweiler. He married Marggreth Binginen, perhaps about 1610, perhaps in Gallenweiler. Stoffel was listed as being a burger (citizen) and Schneider (tailor) of
Gallenweiler. Christoff Treffeÿsen was listed as being from Gallenweiler in the very earliest records found for the family. Since there were no other Treffeisens in the area that have not been identified as his children, it could be possible that he or his father had emigrated from elsewhere to settle in Gallenweiler.
Because the Gallenweiler records do not exist for this early time period, we may never know for sure. It is possible that he was related to the earlier Treffeisen family of Heroldsberg, but again, this cannot be proven with the records found thus far. In any case, he was dead by 1640 when his son Thomas was married in Haltingen, a city twenty miles to the south. By the time the Gallenweiler church records begin in 1648, there is no mention of Christoff or his wife, though Mathias Treffeisen, most likely their son, was married and living there.
Children of Christoff Dreffeisen and possibly Marggreth Binginen are:

+ 2   ii. Thomas Treffeÿsen was born about 1615, perhaps in Gallenweiler before the start of the existing records.
3   i. Anna Dreffeÿsin was born about 1620, perhaps in Gallenweiler before the start of the existing records. She married Fridolin/Fritz Gepler, son of Fritz Gepler of Britzingen and Marggreth Zweithardin, 27 Jan 1645 in Britzingen, Germany. She was listed as the widow of Jacob Würthen(?) at the time of this marriage, and was also identified as the legitimate daughter of Christoff Dreffeisen of Gallenweiler and Marggreth Binginen. Children (all born in Britzingen): Johannes/Hanss Gepler, b. 15 Oct 1645; Marggaratha Gepler, b. 22 Apr 1647, m. Adam Burkhardt 26 May 1673 in Britzingen; Friderich/Fridericus Gepler, b. 26 Aug 1648, d. 10 Oct 1648; Fridolin Gepler, b. 16 Feb 1650, d. 10 Jun 1650; and Barbara Gepler, b. 30 Aug 1651. Note that Fridolin is the name of a saint, and was a popular name to give to children in the Baden region.
+ 4   iii. Mathias Treffeisen was born about 1625, perhaps in Gallenweiler before the start of the existing records. Although no direct evidence identifies him as the son of Christoff, the fact that Christoff was living in Gallenweiler just three years before Mathias was listed there when the records start, and because no other Treffeisen families are in the area, I feel that the likelihood is that Christoff was the father of Mathias.
Record mentioning Anna Dreffeysin, dated 1646.

Generation Two
2. Thomas Treffeysin (Christoff
Dreffeisen1) was born perhaps about 1615, perhaps in Gallenweiler, and died before 1681 when his son Fritz was listed as his surviving son. He married Catharina Widenmann 14 Sep 1640 in Haltingen, Germany. He was a Schneid (tailor) and resided in Oberweiler. “Thomas Treffeÿsen, Schneid” of Oberwiler was a godfather at the baptism of Barbara Itzin 1 Sep 1644 in Badenweiler. “Thomas Treffeÿsen” was a godfather at the baptism of Cunrad Itzin 25 Feb 1648 in Badenweiler. “Thomas Treffeÿsen Schneid zu Oberweiler” was a godfather at the baptism of Claus Fruhr on 3 Adventis [17 Dec] 1648 in Badenweiler. “Thomas Treffeÿsen Schneid” was a godfather at the baptism of Ottilia Fruhr 12 Dec 1650 in Badenweiler. “Thomas Treffeÿsen zu Oberw:” was a godfather at the baptism of Matthias Fruhr 12 Sep 1658 in Badenweiler.
Children of Thomas Treffeysin and Catharina Widenmann are:

+ 5   i. Friderich/Fritz Treffeÿsen was born probably in Oberweiler and was baptized 6 Jun 1644 in Badenweiler.
+ 6   ii. Andreas Treffeysen was born probably in Oberweiler and baptized 2 Feb 1650 in Badenweiler.
7   iii. Anna Treffeÿsen was born probably in Oberweiler and baptized 1 Epiphany [13 Jan] 1656 in Badenweiler. She had an illegitimate son, Alexander (Treffeisen?), whose death was recorded 12 Mar 1685 in Badenweiler. She married, first, Hannß Müller of Garnau(sp?) 4 Feb 1689 in Badenweiler, and second, Hanß Horni of Sehringen 8 Jul 1695 in Badenweiler.
8   iv. Elisabeth Treffeysen/Dreffeÿsin was born probably in Oberweiler and baptized 4 Trinitatus [15 Jul] 1660 in Badenweiler. She married Marx Käsar of Talheim 21 Jun 1686 in Oberweiler.
Record mentioning Thomas Treffeysin, dated 1640 (click to view).
4. Matthias Treffeisen (Christoff Dreffeisen1) was born about 1625, perhaps in Gallenweiler, and died 24 Aug 1670 in Bickensohl. He was probably the son of Christoff Dreffeisen who resided in Gallenweiler in 1645 and his wife Marggreth Binginen. He married Dorothea Gumbert (also Gumpert, Gampert) about 1645. Their marriage record has not been located, nor has her birth or death record. Mathias and Dorothea had several children by the time the Gallenweiler records begin, and they continued to enlarge their family and also participated as Godparents for several children of the other settler families. On 19 Nov 1648, “Dorothea, Mathes Treffeÿsins hausfrau” was named as Godmother of Martin Widmar (the very first baptism recorded in the records). On 24 Jun 1651, “Dorothea, Mathis Treffeisins hausfrau” was named Godmother of Jacob Zimmermann. On 21 Nov 1653, “Dorothea, Mathis Treffeisins hausfrau” was named Godmother of Barbara Neünlist. On 21 Aug 1653, “Dorothea, Mathis Treffeisins frau” was named Godmother of Johannes Effhoterin. On 13 Oct 1653, Mathes Treffeisen was named Godfather of Anna Lutzman. On 28 Oct 1654, Matthis Treffeisin was named Godfather of Petrus Lutzmann. On 13 Jan 1656, Mathis Treffeisin was named Godfather of Johannes Lutzmann. After 1667, there is no further record of any Treffeisen in the Gallenweiler records, and the family is first found in the Bickensohl records in 1668. It appears that Mathias moved his entire family from Gallenweiler to Bickensohl about 1667 or 1668. Just a few short years after moving to Bickensohl, Mathias Treffeisen died. His death record reads: “Den 24 Augusti 1670 starb Mathias Drefeisen von Gallen Weiler, hindersaß allhir” (On the 24th of August 1670 died Mathias Drefeisen of Gallenweiler, non-citizen resident of Bickensohl).

Death Record for ‘Mathias Drefeisen von Gallen Weiler’, 24 Aug 1670

Children of Matthia Treffeisen and (for those without baptism records, possibly) Dorothea Gumbert are:

9   i. Elisabetha Treffeisen was born about Dec 1646 probably in Gallenweiler,  Germany before the start of the existing records and died 20 Jan 1700 in Bickensohl, age 53 years 6 weeks. She married (1) Hanß Jacob Aprill 9 Nov 1668 in Bickensohl. He died 4 Aug 1694 in Bickensohl. Children: Hanß Jacob April, bp. 26 Jul 1669, Elisabetha April, bp. 2 Jan 1671, Susanna April, bp. 5 Feb 1673, Johann Ulrich April, bp. 31 Jan 1675, Mathias April, bp. 3 Sep 1679, Maria April, bp. 16 Jun 1681, Susanna April, bp. 13 Mar 1684, Barbara April, bp. 4 Dec 1686, d. 9 Jan 1700, Jacob, bp. Feb 1687, d. y., unnnamed April, bp. 13 Jan 1689. She married (2) Mathias Deng 5 Aug 1695 in Bickensohl. He died 1 Oct 1696 in Bickensohl, age 65. She married (3) Hans Sebastian Lang 28 Sep 1697 in Bickensohl. He died 20 Oct 1699 in Bickensohl, age 66.
10   ii. Catharina Treffeisen was born about 1648? probably in Gallenweiler, Germany before the start of the existing records. She married Jacob Lense, son of Jacob Lense of Atteswil 22 Jan 1683 in Bickensohl. Children: Jacob Lense, bp. 20 Dec 1683, Mathias Linsig, bp. 1686 [date obscured]. Because of the lack of records in Bickensohl from 1690-92, I suspect that many residents had fled to safer areas during the War of the League of Augsberg. I suspect that Jacob Lense/Linsig died during this period. Catharina Treffeisen, widow of Jacob Linsig, married (2) Sebastian Lang ‘den jung’, 5 Oct 1699 in Bickensohl. They had a daughter Maria Barbara, baptized 13 Oct 1699 in Bickensohl. He was probably the Sebastian Lang who died 29 Aug 1706 in Bickensohl, aged 32 years.
+ 11   iii. Christoph Treffeisen was born about 1650 probably in Gallenweiler, Germany before the start of the existing records, and died 11 May 1708 in Bickensohl.
12   iv. Anna Treffeisen was baptized 15 Feb 1652 in Gallenweiler, Germany.
+ 13   v. Johannes (Hanß) Treffeisen was  baptized 9 Apr 1654 in Gallenweiler, Germany.
14   vi. Agatha Treffeisen was born perhaps sometime before 1664. She baptized an illegitimate son named Severin 21 Dec 1682 in Bickensohl. The father was recorded as being Severin (surname not listed) of Königschaffhausen. An Agatha Treffeisen of Bischoffingen was listed as a sponsor at the baptism of Magdalena Geiser on 5 Apr 1711 in Bickensohl.
An Agatha Treffeisen was listed as a sponsor at the baptism of Maria Geisert in December, 1715 in Bickensohl. It is not known if this was this Agatha or another person.
15   vii. Maria Treffeisen was born 19 Sep 1662 in Gallenweiler, Germany and baptized 23 Sep 1662 in Gallenweiler.
16   viii. Anna Maria Treffeisen, born about 1664, died Jan 1717 in Bickensohl, age 53. She married Mathias Roth 21 May 1688 in Bickensohl. It is not known if this Anna Maria was the same as either Anna or Maria or if they were different children.
17   ix. Barbara Treffeisen was born 9 Feb 1667 in Gallenweiler, Germany and baptized 10 Feb 1667 in Gallenweiler.

Generation Three
5. Friderich/Fritz Treffeisen (Thomas
Treffeysin2, Christoff Dreffeisen1) was born probably in Oberweiler and baptized 6 Jun 1644 in Badenweiler. He married Ursula Jetzin/Itzin 28 Feb 1681 in
Badenweiler. She was listed as the widow of Fritz Crads(sp?) No additional children, other than Conrad, have been found (searched 1681 to 1698).
Children of Friderich Treffeisen and Ursula Itzin are:

18   i. Conrad Treffeisen was born probably in Oberweiler and baptized 13 May 1683 in Badenweiler. He married Margreta Noller, daughter of Adam Noller, 17 May 1707 in Badenweiler. No children were located in the Badenweiler records (searched 1707 to 1715).
6. Andreas Treffeisen (Thomas
Treffeysin2, Christoff Dreffeisen1) was probably born in Oberweiler and baptized 2 Feb 1650 in Badenweiler. He married, first, Anna Kurtzin, widow of Fritz Barthen, 21 Sep 1681 in Badenweiler. No children were found listed in the Badenweiler records (1681 through 1698). He married, second, Margarethe Hüglin 12 Mar 1715 in Badenweiler, the 60 year old unmarried daughter of Hanß Hüglin. She was baptized 18 Apr 1655 in Badenweiler. Because of her age, it is unlikely that Andreas and Margarethe had any children. Andreas was a Nagler (nailmaker) and resided in Oberweiler.
11. Christoph Treffeysen (Matthias
Treffeisen2, Christoff Dreffeisen1) was born about 1650 in Germany, perhaps in Gallenweiler, and died 11 May 1708 in Bickensohl due to ‘Kalt Schlagfluß’ (a stroke). He was identified as having been for 16 years Stabhalter (administrator and judge, possibly the equivalent of the mayor) of Biggensohl. He married Barbara Spitler 22 Jan 1683 in Bickensohl, daughter of Bernhardt Spitler and Barbara Eckerlin (each of her children’s baptism records has her surname crossed out and replaced with Füeslinin) of Gallenweiler. She was baptized 29 Dec 1653 in Gallenweiler and also 29 Dec 1653 in Laufen. She may have been the An. Barbara Treffeisen, wife of the Stabhalter, who died 3 Oct 1714 in Bickensohl. On 20 Dec 1684, Christoph Treffeisen was named godfather at the baptism of Jo: Martin, son of Hanß Ulrich Holbiber and Anna in Bickensohl. On 6 Jul 1688, “Barbara, Stophel Trefeÿßens weib” was named godmother of Barbara, daughter of Hanß Dirsteines and wife of Schwitzerland. On 3 Jan 1690, “Barbara, Christoph Treffeisens uxor” was named godmother at the baptism on Johannes, son of Hanß Ulrich Hölbiben. On 30 Jan 1694, “Barbara, Christoph Treffeisens des Stabhalters uxor” was named godmother at the baptism of H. Ulrich, son of H. Ulrich Hülbiber and Anna. On 27 Jan 1695, “Barbara Spittlerin, Christoph Treffeisens uxor” was named godmother at the baptism of the child of Heinrich Drußel and Barbara Stohlin. On 23 Jul 1695, “Hanß Treffeÿsen” was named godfather at the baptism of Anna Maria, daughter of Jacob Tschumi and Barbara Banhardin.
Because Christoph was listed as having been Stabhalter for 16 years prior to his death in 1708, he would have become Stabhalter just after the residents returned to Bickensohl after presumably fleeing due to the effects of the War of the League of Augsberg.
Children of Christoph Treffeisen and Barbara Spitler are:

+ 19   i. Johannes Valentin Treffeisen was born 4 Nov 1683 in Bickensohl. He was probably named after the pastor who baptized him and who was his godfather, Johann Valentin Rielin.
20   ii. Anna Christina Treffeisen was born 26 Dec 1685 in Bickensohl. She married Johannes Lerch 24 Feb 1711 in Bickensohl.
21   iii. Barbara Treffeisen was born about Nov 1689, and died 26 Nov 1692 in Bickensohl. There are very few records entered in the Bickensohl church registers between Oct 1689 and Sep 1692. This was probably due to the effects of the War of the League of Augsburg. Many members of this village may have fled to safer areas to protect themselves from the French troops.
+ 22   iv. Bernhardt Treffeisen was born about 1690 and died 5 Jul 1750. I have placed Bernhardt here due to the possibility he was named after his grandfather. There are very few records entered in the Bickensohl church registers between Oct 1689 and Sep 1692. This was probably due to the effects of the War of the League of Augsburg. Many members of this village may have fled to safer areas to protect themselves from the French troops. The location of Bernhardt’s baptism may be difficult to locate unless we can uncover where members of Bickensohl fled.
23   v. Anna Elisabetha Treffeisen was born 15 Sep 1692 in Bickensohl. She may be the Anna Treffeisen who married Joh: Georg Worin of Bischoffingen 26 Jan 1712 in Bickensohl. She may have been the Elisabetha Treffeisen, the Stabhalters daughter who was a sponsor at the baptism of Elisabetha Linsig 31 Dec 1712 in Bickensohl.
+ 24   vi. Mathias Treffeisen was born 10 Aug 1694 in Bickensohl.
25   vii. Christoph Treffeisen was born 23 May 1696 in Bickensohl, and died 23 Apr 1697 in Bickensohl.
13. Johannes (Hanß) Treffeisen (Matthias Treffeisen2, Christoff Dreffeisen1) was baptized 9 Apr 1654 in Gallenweiler, Germany and died 21 Aug 1717 in Bickensohl. He married Anna Spitzer. On 30 Nov 1685, Hanß Treffeÿsen was named godfather of Johannes, son of Ulrich Lerch, Hindersaß and Elisabetha in Bickensohl. On 21 Feb 1688, Hanß Treffeÿßen and Anna were named godparents of Mathias, son of Ulrich Lerch and Elisabetha in Bickensohl. On 6 Jul 1688, Hanß Trefeÿßen was named godfather of Barbara, daughter of Hanß Dirsteines and wife of Schwitzerland. On 5 Oct 1689, “Anna, Hanß Treffeisens hausfr.” was named godmother at the baptism of Maria, daughter of Heinrich Dürflin and Maria. On 3 Jan 1690, “Hanß Treffeÿß:” was named godfather at the baptism on Johannes, son of Hanß Ulrich Hölbiben. On 30 Jan 1694, “Hanß Treffeyßen” was named godfather at the baptism of H. Ulrich, son of H. Ulrich Hülbiber and Anna. On 23 Jul 1695, “Barbara, Christoph Treffeÿsens” was named godmother at the baptism of Anna Maria, daughter of Jacob Tschumi and Barbara Banhardin.
Children of Hanß Treffeisen and Anna Spitzer are:

26   i. Anna Barbara Treffeisen was born 16 Oct 1687 in Bickensohl. She married (1) Johannes Klugermann 24 Jan 1708 in Bickensohl. He died 27 Jun 1713 in Bickensohl. Children: Anna Maria Klugermann, bp. 11 Aug 1709, died 23 Aug 1709; Anna Barbara Klugermann, bp. 31 Oct 1710, died 28 Nov 1710; Johannes Klugermann, bp. 13 Jun 1712. Anna Barbara Treffeisen married (2) Peter Drüssel 21 Jan 1716 in Bickensohl. Children: daughter, bp. Mar 1718,  Joh Geo, bp. 28 May 1719.
27   ii. Elisabetha Treffeisen was born perhaps 1689-90 and probably died between Feb 1714 (when her daughter was born) and Nov 1715 (when her husband remarried). She married Fridrich Spitler of Gallenweiler 8 Feb 1712 in Bickensohl. Children: Anna Maria Spitler, b. 14 Feb 1714 in Bickensohl. Fridrich Spitler of Gallenweiler married Anna Maria Spitzer 19 Nov 1715 in Bickensohl. Elizabetha Treffeisen, daughter of Hanß Trefeisen was a sponsor at the baptism of Elisabetha Linsig 31 Dec 1712 in Bickensohl.
28   iii. Anna Sophia Treffeisen was born 8 Apr 1695 in Bickensohl and died in 18 Feb 1696 in Bickensohl.
29   iv. Anna Dorothea Treffeisen was born 8 Apr 1695 in Bickensohl and died 27 Aug 1695 in Bickensohl, age 20 weeks, 4 days.
30   v. Sophia Dorothea Treffeisen was born 13 Feb 1698 in Bickensohl and died 17 Nov 1775 aged 77 years 9 months and 3 days. She married Matthis Lerch 16 Jan 1717 in Bickensohl. He was born 17 Sep 1695 in Bickensohl and died 8 Aug 1747 in Bickensohl. Children (all events in Bickensohl): Anna Maria Lerch, b. 2 Nov 1719; Matthis Lerch, b. 5 Jan 1722, d. 27 Mar 1746; Anna Barbara Lerch, b. 29 Jan 1724, d. 25 Feb 1781; Johannes Lerch, bapt. 22 Aug 1726, d. 29 Aug 1726, age 8 days (the death record has ‘Jul’ instead of Aug, but it appears this was added later, and is off by one month); Elisabetha Lerch, b. 18 Jul 1727, d. 18 Oct 1745; Catharina Lerch, b. 6 Apr 1730, d. 6 May 1730; Catharina Lerch, b. 25 Aug 1731; Johann Lerch (twin), b. 13 Apr 1735, d. 25 Oct 1741; Anna Sophia Lerch (twin), b. 13 Apr 1735; Hannß Georg Lerch, b. 25 Feb 1738; Salome Lerch, b. 29 Jul 1740, d. 18 Sep 1740.
31   vi. Anna Treffeisen was born about 1702 in Bickensohl and died 23 Dec 1705 in Bickensohl.
32   vii. Anna Treffeisen was born about 21 Jan 1707 in Bickensohl and died 21 Jan 1707 in Bickensohl.
33   viii. unnamed daughter Treffeisen was born about 1708 probably in Bickensohl and died 11 Feb 1708 in Bickensohl.

Generation Four
19. Johannes Valentin Treffeisen (Christoph
Treffeisen3, Matthias Treffeisen2, Christoff Dreffeisen1) was born 4 Nov 1683 in Bickensohl and died 2 Apr 1754 in Bickensohl. He married (1) Anna Maria Lentz 1 Feb 1707 in Gallenweiler, Germany. She was born 25 Mar 1686 in Gallenweiler, daughter of Hanß Lentz and Barbara Fünffgeld, and died 27 Mar 1720. Several of the children born to this couple had both Bernhardt Spitler Sr. and Jr. as a baptismal witness. Since Bernhardt Spitler Sr. was Johann Valentin Treffeisen’s maternal grandfather, it appears that he may have met his wife through visits to see his mother’s family in Gallenweiler. He married (2) Anna Maria Klugermann, probably in mid to late 1720 or early 1721. She died 5 Dec 1758 in Bickensohl. Johannes Valentin Treffeisen was a Stabhalter just as his father had been. He was also listed in the records as Valentin and Velten.
Children of Johann Valentin Treffeisen and Anna Maria Lentz are:

34   i. Johann Jacob Treffeisen was born perhaps about 1707 and died Jan 1709 in Bickensohl. Did he die due to the extreme winter of 1708/1709? Since his baptism is not found in the Bickensohl records, could he have been baptized in Gallenweiler where his parents were married?
35   ii. Verena Treffeisen was born 2 Jun 1709 in Bickensohl, and was baptized 3 Jun 1709 in Bickensohl.
36   iii. Barbara Treffeisen was born 11 May 1711 in Bickensohl and died 26 Feb 1718 in Bickensohl.
+ 37   iv. Johann Jacob Treffeisen was born 1 Sep 1712 in Bickensohl and died 29 Jun 1782 in Bickensohl. There is a cross next to his baptism record, typically indicating that the child died. However, in reviewing the baptism records for those individuals who died in the days before and after Johann Jacob, it is clear that this cross is of the same style as that used by the minister in 1782 and therefore added much later.
38   v. Johann Georg Treffeisen was born 17 Mar 1715 in Bickensohl and died 7 Dec 1715 in Bickensohl.
39   vi. unnamed Treffeisen died 21 Aug 1716 in Bickensohl. Because she was mentioned as ‘töchterlein’ and because she was not named, I believe this daughter died at or shortly after birth.
40   vii. Elisabetha Treffeisen was born 2 Nov 1717 in Bickensohl and died 18 Nov 1717 in Bickensohl.
Children of Johann Valentin Treffeisen and Anna Maria Klugermann are:

41   viii. Hanß Michel Treffeisen was born 14 Nov 1721 in Bickensohl and died 24 Jan 1723 in Bickensohl.
+ 42   ix. Johannes Treffeisen was born 6 Feb 1723 in Bickensohl, and died 7 May 1797 in Bickensohl.
22. Bernhardt Treffeisen (Christoph Treffeisen3, Matthias Treffeisen2, Christoff Dreffeisen1) was born probably about 1690 and died 5 Jul 1750 in Bickensohl. He married Magdalena Spitzer probably about 1713. She was born 2 Aug 1690 in Bickensohl and died 4 Apr 1776 in Bickensohl.
Children of Bernhardt Treffeisen and Magdalena Spitzer are:

43   i. Anna Maria Treffeisen was born 30 Sep 1715 in Bickensohl and died 30 Sep 1715 in Bickensohl.
44   ii. Anna Barbara Treffeisen was born 26 Apr 1719 in Bickensohl and died 26 Jul 1719 in Bickensohl.
45   iii. Anna Barbara Treffeisen was born 23 Apr 1723 in Bickensohl, and died 11 Apr 1797 in Bickensohl, supposedly aged 78 years, 9 days. It appears that the minister made two mistakes in calculating her age, first, he located the first Anna Barbara, daughter of Bernhard Treffeisen who died young instead of the second Anna Barbara, and he misread the first Anna Barbara’s birthdate as being on the 2nd instead of on the 26th. She married Mathias Bär 25 May 1754 in Bickensohl. Children: Johann Jacob Bär, b. (illegitimate) 1 May 1754, d. 1 Jul 1754 age 12 months; Johann Georg Bär, b. 31 Jul 1755, d. 4 Sep 1757 age 2 years 1 month 4 days; Johann Georg Bär, b. 10 Apr 1758, d. 26 Dec 1769 age 11 years 8 months 15 days; Maria Catharina Bär, b. 27 Aug 1760, d. 8 May 1826; Johannes Bär, b. 3 Oct 1762, d. 23 Dec 1769 age 7 years 2 months 20 days.
46   iv. Hanß Jacob Treffeisen was born 28 Jul 1727 in Bickensohl. He married Barbara Scherberger 5 Dec 1747 in Bickensohl. This may have been the Hannß Jacob Treffeisen who was a sponsor at the baptism of Anna Maria Linsig on 20 Feb 1745 in Bickensohl and again at the baptism of a second Anna Maria Linsig 28 Oct 1746 in Bickensohl. The second time he was listed as a Zimmergeselle (apprentice carpenter). After his marriage to Barbara Scherberger, there is no record of him in the Bickensohl records. It could be that he moved away to raise his family, perhaps to his wife’s village. One clue to where that might be is found in the baptism record of Johann Jacob Bär, the son of Hanß Jacob’s sister Anna Barbara Treffeisen, on 1 May 1754 in Bickenohl. The sponsors at this baptism included “Magdalena Scherinbergerin von Vörstätten”. This is probably Vörstetten, located just east of Bickensohl and just north of Freiburg. Further research in this village may confirm this theory.
47   v. Matthias Treffeisen was born 21 Feb 1732 in Bickensohl and died 25 Mar 1736 in Bickensohl.
24. Mathias Treffeisen (Christoph Treffeisen3, Matthias Treffeisen2, Christoff Dreffeisen1) was born 10 Aug 1694 in Bickensohl and died 12 Aug 1761 in Königschaffhausen. He was listed as Burger von Bickensohl alt 67 Jahr und 2 Tag. He married Anna Maria Reitstock 16 Nov 1717 in Bickensohl. She was born 20 May 1695 in Bahlingen, the daughter of Adam Reitstock and Ursula Schmid, and died 10 Nov 1755, possibly in Königschaffhausen. It appears that Mathias moved with his family to Königschaffhausen sometime after his last child was born in Bickensohl in 1742 and when his son Johannes was married in Königschaffhausen in 1745.
Children of Mathias Treffeisen and Anna Maria Reitstock are:

48   i. Johannes Treffeisen was born 27 Apr 1719 in Bickensohl and died probably before Feb 1720, probably in Bickensohl.

She worked as a nurse at the Olive View Tuberculosis Sanitarium in Sylmar, California, probably since it opened in 1920. Notes:

If Matthia Treffeisen was from Gallenweiler, did he leave other Treffeisen family members there when he or his children moved to Bickensohl? Is the Bickensohl Treffeisen family just one offshoot of a larger Treffeisen family? To answer this, I used the list of Treffeisens currently living in Germany as found on the Germany Telephone listing site. I took each of these entries, removed duplicates, and plotted each of them on a map to view their distribution.
Some interesting things appeared. The largest concentration of Treffeisens in any spot is in Bickensohl and the two neighboring villages of Achkarren and Ihringen with a combined total of 10 households. The nearby medium-sized town of Breisbach has an additional 5 households. Nowhere else in Germany can this concentration of Treffeisen households be found. This indicates to me that the main branch, if not the entire surviving family can trace their origins to Bickensohl and the immediate surrounding area. One other large concentration can be found in the closest large city of Freiburg with a total of 8 households. I believe these represent modern Treffeisen families who left the small village for the larger city life. An additional 13 households can be found in the surrounding suburbs, but they are scattered far and wide, indicating that these are other large-city dwellers who have moved to the suburbs. One very interesting thing also showed up. There are two Treffeisen households in the vicinity of Gallenweiler: 1 in Bad Krozingen and 1 in Eschbach. Since there is not a large concentration here, these could just be Treffeisens who moved back down to the Gallenweiler area, perhaps not knowing that their ancestors had originally come from this area. They could also be a very distant and very small branch of the Treffeisen family who never left the Gallenweiler area. More research may be needed to see which is the case.
