Family of John Treffeisen of Golden, Colorado
John (or Johann) Treffeisen arrived November 13, 1854 in New York aboard the ship Helvetia. He is the earliest known
Treffeisen to come to America. Although we haven't been able to locate him in the German records yet, other records
show that he was born June 5, 1833 in Germany and died December 17, 1921, probably in Golden, Colorado. He married
Theresa, born August 29, 1835 and died March 23, 1911. Both are buried in Golden Colorado. John and Theresa Treffeisen
first settled somewhere in Pennsylvania where their children were all born, but about 1879
they moved to Golden, Colorado. He was listed as a farmer when he arrived in America, but was listed as a butcher in
1880. He enlisted as a Lieutenant 1st Class in the Civil War on 23 April 1861, was commissioned in Company G, 8th
Infantry Regiment, Pennsylvania on 23 April 1861 and mustered out of Company G, 8th Infantry Regiment, Pennsylvania on
29 July 1861 in Harrisburg, PA. Note that a Christian Treffeisen with wife Philippoena also served on the same
dates in the same unit as John. They were likely related and perhaps brothers. John and Teresa Treffeisen's children
were:
- Rosa F., born 1860 in Pennsylvania, died 1921 in Colorado, married Stephen Fuller (1845-1914) and had a
daughter Louise Fuller in 1885 and possibly a son William H Fuller (1889-1963).
- John (1861 - 1865). This information is from a tombstone in Golden, Colorado. If John is actually buried here,
that would indicate the family probably arrived in Colorado by 1865. This is in conflict with Albert J. Treffeisen's
recorded birthplace of Pennsylvania.
- Louisa Treffeisen, born June 6, 1862 in Pennsylvania, died November 14, 1933 in Colorado, married J. W. Greiner
and had a son John T. Greiner (1888 - 7 Oct 1892 in Colorado) and daughter Eva Greiner, b. 1891 in CO.
- Bertha, born about 1876.
- Albert J (1878 - 1968) married Helena E (1882 - 1974), they may have had son Fred J. Treffeisen (28 Apr
1902-Nov 1981 in Colorado) who m. Lucile W. (1905-2001) and had daughter Greta Lou (1929-).
