Family of Wilhelm Treffeisen and Bertha Schreier

Wilhelm Treffeisen was born in Bickensohl in 1856, the illegitimate son of the unmarried woman Anna Maria Treffeisen. Because his mother died when he was just four months old, he was raised by his uncle. When he was 17, he decided to join his elder brother Jacob who had emigrated to Philadelphia before him. He lived with his brother after he arrived in 1873, and sometime about 1881 he married Bertha Schreier. He opened a merchant tailor shop and they raised five children: William, Emma Rosalie, Amelia Louise, Mary 'Albertina', and Bertha Ida. In 1897, Wilhelm contracted tuberculosis and died, leaving Bertha to raise their children. The family eventually left Philadelphia and moved to Florida and California.
